Introduction - Julia's Expenses
For those who don't already know, I represent Eaton Socon ward on St Neots Town Council
along with three colleagues. After the scandal of MPs' ridiculous expense claims and the
public anger that came out of it hit the news - perfectly justified to the normal person
in the street, but way over the heads of the MPs given how many said "well, yes, it was
in the rules" - I made a public commitment in one of our leaflets to keep people informed
as to exactly what I received and exactly where it went.
Of course, this makes rather dull reading, given that I don't believe a councillor
(or MP) should be doing the job if their motive is to make money. Expenses should
be purely for making up anything you spend out of your own pocket on the council's
behalf - and even then some discretion comes into it; I would let anything insignificant
go on the basis that I have better things to do than worry about the odd pound or so I
spend that technically I could get back. I find it beggars belief that millionaires should
be expending the paperwork effort required to claim for a packet of biscuits - but then,
maybe that's why they are millionaires and I'm not.
